Gifting Health & Happiness

The holidays are upon us and if you're anything like me, you've just barely begun shopping for gifts. Not to fear, Love Fit Life is here!

Passing on the gift of health, fitness and general wellness is something I love... obviously. However, one of the reasons I love it so much is because of the happiness these gifts have brought me as a recipient! Don't be afraid to use gifting as a way to encourage and motivate both yourself and the people you love. Making good choices and prioritizing health is a group effort, so jump up and lead the way. Here are some of my favorites - they range from inexpensive to a bit more costly, because we all know that wallet size and wish lists vary!

Massages & Spa Treatments

If there's one thing I've always known, it's that massages and spa treatments are the bees knees. Gifting these things doesn't have to be insanely expensive either. Check out Groupon and Living Social for specials or go straight to a no nonsense massage spot like one of these for a great gift certificate:

Some ideas of places to Yelp or look up in your area are reflexology (which is basically like a massage where you keep your clothes on and have your feet in a nice bath of warm water), blow out salons (where there just wash and blow dry/style your hair - great for women to use for a special event or party), manicures & pedicures, facials, and the list goes on!

The Happiness Project Journals

I received The Happiness Project One-Sentence Journal as a gift this year and oh my goodness I want everyone in the world to have it. It's perfect for ANYONE (especially people on the go) and it's literally the only way I've consistently been able to journal ever in my life. Each day of the year has its own page, outfitted with an inspirational quote and a space for one sentence, five years in a row. One sentence a day is a piece of cake, and as each year progresses, you can read what you wrote for that day the year before (or 4 years before by the time you're done). To top it off, it sells for $10-20 depending where you buy it (check out Amazon for great online deals) - Awesome, right?!

Also check out the Q & A a Day journal (versions available for both adults and children) if you can't get enough or want more things like this!

Want to see a bunch of great versions and so much more in person?
Find a Paper Source near you and enjoy!

Exercise Classes & Equipment

Last year, my incredible friend Emily handed me a card and wouldn't let go until explaining that she was really excited about doing this gift together and hoped I didn't take it the wrong way. I was a little uneasy after hearing such a disclaimer, but opened the card to find the perfect gift! She had purchased a Groupon for me as a gift, and another for herself so we could take 10 Cardio Barre classes together. We had such a great time going to classes together and trying out something new. Not only that, but it heightened my interest in barre style classes which has led me to Pure Barre!

At my home studio, Pure Barre Pasadena, there are a plethora of holiday deals, gifts and class packages that are perfect for gifting to anyone and everyone! Even clients who want studio merchandise can create a wish list that will be emailed to their family and friends. Easy, breezy, beautiful! The Pure Barre Pasadena Facebook page is a great place to keep up with all the holiday excitement going on now.

Juicers, Blenders & Beyond

Don't ever hesitate to give the gift of home appliances that will allow your loved ones to make healthier choices. Since I actively advocate and enjoy smoothies and fresh fruit & vegetable juices, I love buying people the tools to join me and make their own! Even though you don't necessarily blend or juice together, that doesn't mean it's not an exciting group project. I love texting my friends what's in my juice or smoothie for the day and planning out what the rest of the week will entail. Not surprisingly, it keeps all of us more accountable and eager to set positive goals that will be more easily fulfilled.

The other great thing about gifting a blender or juicer is they come in all different price ranges and quality levels. You don't need to give the best of the best of the best (SIR!) - just focus on getting them started and the thought that counts. My first blender was a piece of crap, but it got me hooked and I eventually did my own research and told all my family and friends exactly which one I wanted for an upcoming holiday.

Another great home appliance that comes in all shapes and sizes?! George Foreman grills! These handy dandy cooking machines are great for anyone trying to make healthier eating choices. They cook a LOT of different foods, they cook everything quickly and require little clean up. Not quite sure what a George Foreman grill is?? It's ok... we all have to start somewhere - Wikipedia to the rescue!

This holiday season, I wish you...
the gift of peace from within, the courage to make the healthier choice, the calming effect of 3 deep breaths, the reward of practicing patience, the priority of self worth and personal commitment, the relief of a wonderful workout, the joy and laughter from enjoying irreplaceable company and loved ones, the power of a positive attitude and the awareness that this moment and the lifetime that follows is meant to be lived and loved, forever!

[TPBE] The Results

A month and a half ago I made a commitment to trade in my normal exercise routine for classes at Pure Barre Pasadena. I went from a steady routine of weight training, fitness classes and cardio exercise about 4 times per week to consistently attending 2-4 classes at Pure Barre Pasadena each week. What began as a hopeful attempt to improve my physical appearance turned out to be a transformation unlike anything I imagined possible.

I, personally, am pretty speechless about how much change I saw in such little time... especially since I was already in pretty good shape, I didn't change my eating habits and I mayyyybe did 2 additional "cardio only" sessions each week (Example: 20 min on elliptical outside of class), IF it was a good week. My entire concept of body types is changing, I'm finally abandoning unhealthy notions of weight control and I'm understanding what's ACTUALLY WORKING more than ever before.

The Stats
Check out [TPBE] The Starting Line for pictures of where I began!
Starting Weight: 134.5 lbs
Ending Weight: 132.1 lbs (2.4 pounds lost)
This transformation wasn't about weight loss to me but I was impressed that my weight did drop a bit. More than anything, it was about seeing how my body physically changed and responded to this style of exercise. Pure Barre taught me so much about what ACTUALLY counts when getting in shape - see "Top Lessons Learned" below for more!

Starting Bust: 35"
Ending Bust: 33" (2 inches lost)
This measurement change is one of the most interesting to me - technically, my "girls" are smaller, but because my whole upper body is more toned, the "girls" are perkier than ever and getting lots of compliments! So, ladies, maybe it's not all about size and it has more to do with shape, tone and overall appearance!

Starting Waist: 27"
Ending Waist: 26" (1 inch lost)
A smaller waist has translated into more feminine curves which I LOVE! I've never really had problems with this measurement/area but the more toned and lean, the better!

Starting "Right Below the Bellybutton": 30.5"
Ending "Right Below the Bellybutton": 29" (1.5 inches lost)
THANK YOU PURE BARRE FOR BEING THE FIRST WORKOUT THAT HAS EVERRRRRRR ADDRESSED & CHANGED THIS AREA!!!! I cannot stress enough how incredible this measurement change is for me - this is my trouble zone/insecure spot/whatever you want to call the part of my body that I've always struggled with and I'm FINALLLY feeling better about it for the first time in my LIFE!

Starting Hips:  39"
Ending Hips: 38" (1 inch lost)
Smaller hips and my butt still looks great?! Wow, I quite literally thought that was impossible. When I started working out, people would tell me, "don't lose your curves!" - Pure Barre taught me that I don't have to lose it, I can IMPROVE IT!

Starting Thighs: 23" (each thigh)
Ending Thighs: 22" (1 inch lost per thigh)
Again with the WOW... for the first time ever, I am confident in shorts or a mini skirt. For the first time ever, I look down at my legs when I'm sitting and I don't think I look fat. For the first time ever, I LOVE MY LEGS!!

Starting Biceps: 10" (each bicep)
Ending Biceps: 10"
No change here but the difference in definition and toning is completely visible. I've been getting the MOST compliments on my arms since I started TPBE and I'm pretty sure my fat is being steadily replaced with muscle - I LIKE I LIKE!

THAT MEANS I LOST AN INCH OFF MY ENTIRE BODY IN LESS THAN 2 MONTHS!

I HAVEN'T CHANGED MY MEASUREMENTS OR BODY SIZE LIKE THAT SINCE I STARTED MY FIT LIFE 2 YEARS AGO... WHICH MEANS I CHANGED MORE IN 2 MONTHS THAN I HAVE IN 2 YEARS...

Top Lessons Learned
  • It's actually not about weight loss - for me, at least. Pure Barre helped me WAKE UP to the reality that there can be a huge difference between losing pounds and actually changing your appearance and shape. At a certain point, I weighed less than I do now, but I wasn't in love with how I looked; my body responded to cutting calories and losing pounds by leaving me hungry, uneven and perpetually frustrated and critical. Now, instead of focusing on the scale, I'm focused on my inner core strength, my flexibility, my body measurements, my proportionality and my personal confidence level - and I'm LOVING IT! I finally understand and know that I'd rather lose inches than pounds, any day.
  • It's actually not about the movement, it's about contracting and working the muscles. Pure Barre helped me UNDERSTAND that working out is supposed to be challenging, it doesn't need to be large scale and upbeat, and you have to actually focus on contracting and using your muscles if you want results. The most impossible moves were totally do-able after I properly began tightening my core... my moves became more fluid and effective when I learned to keep my hips tucked in and my posture straight... I was able to increase my reps and performance after being taught to concentrate on contracting my muscles to make the movements.
  • It's actually not boring to consistently do the "same thing." By attending classes taught by different instructors and concentrating on increasing my personal performance, it felt like a NEW and FUN challenge every time I went. In addition to supportive and motivational instructors, great music and concentrated breathing kept me going and entertained the whole way through!

THANK YOU PURE BARRE PASADENA!
I FEEL BETTER THAN EVER AND I'M DEFINITELY NOT STOPPING.

Are you ready to meet me at the barre?

[TPBE] The Best of the Best of the Best, SIR!

It's my last full week of The Pure Barre Effect... where has the time gone?!? Of course and as usual, life is trying to get in the way of an ideal week consisting of nothing but Pure Barre classes everyday, a blissfully healthy eating regimen and endless amounts of energy and motivation. No such luck though. Work is crazy hectic, I'm house sitting all week, I have various get togethers and events to attend, and the list goes on. Sounds like time to roll over and give up, right?? WRONG!! It's time to SHINE, baby! Like the Men in Black would say, we want THE BEST OF THE BEST OF THE BEST, SIR!

You know me, though... I like to be honest, and as much as I want sit on my high horse and proclaim, "ohhh yahhhh no problem - I have it allll under control" - that's just poppycock. An insanely busy schedule combined with high and mighty goals can be a tough combination to balance and doesn't typically end well. It takes a concerted effort, planning, a desire to succeed, the persistence to keep going, and reminders reminders reminders. If I was living with my parents, I might be able to rely on a plethora of post-it notes scattered around the house, but that's not the case (thank goodness - no offense, love you and your post-its, mom!) So far, the best thing that's worked for me during a "really on" week is a series of reminders of things to think about and act on.

For TPBE, my reminders consist of a variety of Pure Barre related and general lifestyle items. The two aspects combined help me push it to the next level, feel tangible changes and see physical results.
---------------
Raise higher on my toes, keep a tucked seat, and sink lower into the position during the entire class.
INSTEAD OF
Feeling comfortable, slacking off and doing the minimum to get through class.
-----
Focus on my breathing throughout the entire class - Inhale...2...3...4... Exhale...2...3...4...
INSTEAD OF
Keeping my body tight and holding my breathe.
-----
Bring my water to stay hydrated right before class starts and right after class ends.
INSTEAD OF
Going unprepared and feeling dehydrated and tired.
-----
Use 3 pound weights in class.
INSTEAD OF
Sticking with the 2 pound weights I always use.
-----
Close my eyes and breathe through the pain when it feels unbearable.
INSTEAD OF
Giving up and coming out of the position.
-----
Concentrate on my form and monitor myself in the mirrors.
INSTEAD OF
Slacking off and avoiding the maximum benefits possible.
-----
Take 30 seconds to mix up a protein shake on the go.
INSTEAD OF
Driving through to get fast food because I'm "too" busy and didn't plan ahead.
-----
Go for a quick walk around the block when I get home.
INSTEAD OF
Eating right away or sinking into the couch when I walk through the door.
-----
Focus on one task at a time.
INSTEAD OF
Getting overwhelmed.
-----
Drink a glass of water.
INSTEAD OF
Mindlessly snacking.
-----
Stop, think, make smart decisions, and act thoughtfully.
INSTEAD OF
Drifting through my day on auto pilot and suffering the consequences of making mistakes and poor choices.

[TPBE] The Q & A Session

Week 4 of The Pure Barre Effect is done and I'm still loving the classes at Pure Barre Pasadena. I've been getting a lot of questions from Love Fit Life supporters, so I thought it would be fun to change up the review & recap this week and do a little Q & A session...

Q: What's all this TPBE and Pure Barre about?
A: The Pure Barre Effect (TPBE) is an experiment to see what happens when I cut out all my weight training and change my regular exercise routine to revolve around consistent classes at Pure Barre Pasadena. My transformation experiment will be complete on August 1st (Eeeek!) and I'm already seeing more results than I ever thought imaginable. This unique workout/class style that incorporates Pilates, yoga, 2-5 pound weights, a little red ball, the ballet barre, and isometric movements creates long and lean muscles that strengthens and tones your whole body.

Q: How often do you go to classes at Pure Barre Pasadena?
A: I've been going to about 3 classes per week. On Mondays, I'll go to the schedule online and sign up for 3-4 classes that week that I can go to. Sometimes my week is a lot busier than expected so I'll only make it to 2 classes, while other weeks work out as planned and I make it to all 3-4.

Q: Isn't that a lot? Aren't you busy?
A: Well, yes, I am really busy, but this is a critical part of my routine - by making it a priority to aim for 3 classes per week, I am more careful about keeping an organized calendar, I'm more mindful about overbooking myself, and I'm rewarded by looking and feeling fantastic at the end of each and every day. I typically plan classes for a few days right after work so I still have time to get my day duties done and make it home in time for dinner and a good night sleep.

Q: Isn't it expensive?
A: It's probably more expensive than that gym membership you're paying for and not really using, but it's less expensive than a lot of alternatives and it's incredibly worth it. By buying smart and getting packages to use over time or unlimited memberships on a monthly basis, I end up paying about $10 per class. When $10 classes that yield outstanding and noticeable results is up against the comparable alternatives like personal training sessions, it's a no-brainer for me.

Q: What exactly are these outstanding and noticeable results so far?
A: Ohhhhh let me tell you...
  • My arms are more defined in the best way I've ever seen them - no big bulk, just sleek definition. That famous area of fat by the armpit that overflows over tube tops is also going down - thank goodness!
  • My back is more toned and defined... and is getting compliments for the first time (I think ever).
  • My abs are more flat than they've ever been (yes, even flatter than when I went to the Bahamas) - the area under by breasts that always bulges out when I have a bra on is disappearing and my lower abs which is my main trouble area is flattening out more than it ever has with any other exercise or workout program. This is my biggest area of excitement!
  • My love handle area is toning up and the muffin top effect that always happens with certain clothing is getting smaller... like a little mini muffin now and soon to be no muffin at all (hopefully).
  • My seat (buttocks) is more toned and lifted than when I began... I've been blessed with good child bearing hips (as my mother likes to say), so this area will take a consistent amount of effort, but I've definitely noticed an improvement.
  • My thighs are thinner and there's space forming in between my legs when I stand up straight (with my legs together).
  • My calves are getting super toned!
  • My posture and "at-ease" stance are improving - I find that I'm keeping my core tightened without thinking about it as much, and my habit of slouching is transforming into standing up tall - hooray!
  • My menstrual cycle symptoms have dramatically improved.
  • My overall frame appears to be getting smaller. When looking in the big mirrors in class, I've noticed my profile looking a lot leaner.
  • My clothes fit better... they're not necessarily bigger like they would be if I was losing weight, but they look and feel better overall. This is awesome to me because when I have lost weight and changed sizes, it can get expensive to change out a lot of your wardrobe.
Q: Are you serious....?
A: YES!

Q: Does the class get easier the more you go?
A: Yes and no...
  • Yes...it gets easier in the sense that you are more familiar with the movements and your mind and body get better at breathing through the pain. The more I work certain muscles, the more they can handle before I want and/or need to give up. The more consistent I am about going to class, the more conditioned my body is to get through the workout.
  • No...it doesn't get easier because the movements are always changing, the class gets modified, and realistically, you wouldn't see such great results if it was easy... One thing I love about Pure Barre is that you can self-modify to make it harder again as you DO get better. For instance, I was recently in a class, in a certain position/exercise and I noticed I was smoothe sailing through all the reps. I knew this wasn't right and that it was a sign I needed to self-modify because I was improving. So, I raised up higher on my tippy toes, sank down lower into my "seat" position, and instantly started shaking from how hard it was. Since then, I've been more and more aware to self-modify and adjust as I go more and get better. Yes, it kind of sucks when you go from "ohhh yahhh this is a piece of cake" to "ohhh noooo I want to scream," but the results and that great "I DID IT" feeling that follows certainly does NOT suck at all.

As always, I want to hear from all of you so don't hold back if you have more questions, comments, suggestions, etc... Until next time, remember to tuck your seat! See you soon baboon!

[TPBE] The Halfway Hump

The Pure Barre Effect is going strong and I'm proud to report I've successfully finished my 3rd week! I can't believe how fantastic the classes at Pure Barre Pasadena have been so far, the friends I've already made and the outstanding progress I've seen and experienced in such a short time. The completion of my 3rd week is extra exciting too because it means I've reached my halfway point. With my completion date of August 1 just around the corner, I'm reminding myself to really put in the time and effort to finish with the maximum results possible. For me, the halfway hump in any project or goal reaching journey has a tendency to get me a little down and dragging... but not this time! I feel more motivated than ever to step up and get that long lean and toned body I've always dreamed of!

Playing peek-a-boo before Jake whips me into shape!

Recap
During my 3rd week of TPBE, I attended the following classes:

Monday 7/2/12 @ 6:35 pm with Jake DuPree
Class with Jake on Monday was outstanding! The routine was clearly changed up a bit from the previous week so I got to do a lot of new and challenging exercises. One thing about Pure Barre Pasadena that I'm really loving is this change of pace and routine - just when my body starts to adjust to a certain move, they switch it up which results in more progress! Jake's amazing ability to instruct and demonstrate made the class even more of a success too. Love it!

Tuesday 7/3/12 @ 6:35 pm with Kimi Cantrell
Pure Barre the day before Independence Day was awesome! Not only was the class filled to the brim, but it had more switched up moves like the day before. I noticed some of the same changes from the day before, but there were even more new moves incorporated. This new routine the 2nd day in a row really had me working up a sweat, and Kimi's incredibly sweet and reassuring nature got me through to the end without a problem!

Saturday 7/7/12 @ 8:25 am with Jake DuPree
This was my first morning class at Pure Barre Pasadena and let me just say... I WANT MOREEEE!!! Granted, it's always challenging to rise and shine on a weekend to exercise, but I wouldn't have done it any other way! I had a long day planned ahead of me and it was exactly what I needed to get myself going and in a positive state of mind. Jake, as always, was amazing and got me giggling, which was critical when trying not to be upset about being awake on Saturday morning!

Thoughts & Observations
Again, I must stress how wonderful the change of routine was... or rather, how wonderful it was that I actually noticed for the first time. Since it was my 3rd consistent week I was able to identify a pattern to some extent - while there is a base template for the class(es), the focus and specific movements are modified and adjusted each week (so it seems). I'm not sure what the method to the madness is, but I love it - it's making me confident and comfortable with the technique while simultaneously getting me excited and working hard on something new.

This week, I really started noticing bigger changes in my body and the level of toning that I'm getting. My legs feel and look leaner... there is space forming in between my thighs when I stand with my legs together... I quite literally thought that was impossible (for my body). My lower abdomen is flatter than it's ever been... the source of my "I hate how this shirt/outfit looks" statements is disappearing... again, I thought that was impossible!

In terms of soreness, I feel it the most in my triceps (back of the arms) and calves. Along with the soreness though, I also notice how shockingly good they're looking.... ohhhh yahhh!

Being fun and fierce with Kimi & Jake - obviously...

Favorite Technique of the Week
Stretching throughout class.
At Pure Barre Pasadena, we are constantly stretching throughout class. We'll warm up, do arms, then stretch... we'll do thighs, then stretch... we'll do our seat (buttocks), then stretch... we'll do abs, then stretch... it's outstanding. My issues and inability to get into a good stretching habit is being completely redefined by Pure Barre Pasadena. I've come to require and appreciate this portion of class more than I thought possible. Not only has it increased my performance and ability to excel in class, but it's dramatically increased my overall flexibility, which I'm totally in favor of! Like Mase would say, BREATHE, STRETCH, SHAKE!

[TPBE] Little Tuck, Little Squeeze & Big Results Please!

Another week of The Pure Barre Effect is done and Pure Barre Pasadena has me hooked!

Recap
During my 2nd week of TPBE, I attended the following classes:

Wednesday 6/27/12 @ 6:35 pm with Leah Purcell
Leah continues to push me to my limit and keep me motivated. I can't help but swoon over her long and lean body equip with legs that are always so perfectly straight! In Leah's class, I often find myself determined to keep going and get to that point of flexibility. She also does a great job balancing a cheerful attitude with strong leadership that really clicks with me... Thank you, Leah - I will see you and your long and lean self again soon :)

Friday 6/29/12 @ 5:30 pm with Melanie Colbrunn
This was my first class with Mel and it was a KILLER! I'm not sure if it was so challenging because I was tired from a long week or if her moves were just too much for me to handle (or a combination), but it definitely got me sweating and out of breathe. I liked her feisty and determined attitude that really kept the class going even when we were struggling the most - at one point she even refused to count down the last 10 reps until everyone was doing it together... Feeling that sense of Pure Barre team work felt great!

Saturday 6/30/12
I am sad to say that I signed up for this Saturday morning class and I didn't end up making it there. Unfortunately, I just had too much going on, which is a very real part of life sometimes. I am happy (though) to say, I didn't allow myself to get discouraged and I committed to going strong the next week.

Feeling that Pure Barre Effect and LOVING IT!!
Thank you, Pure Barre Pasadena for making this 4th of July my most confident red, white & blue bikini body day I've ever had :)

Thoughts & Observations
Week 2 has me feeling more at ease with the exercises and already noticing big changes. The 2 areas I notice to most: abs/midsection and calves. My lower abdomen is flattening out more than I've ever felt or seen which literally leaves me jumping for joy! My calves are noticing big changes too - all that work up on my tippy toes is giving my legs some incredible definition... I feel like that episode of MTV's True Life where the guy gets calf implants (hehe).

Favorite Technique of the Week
"The higher the heel the thinner the thigh"
One thing we do A LOT at Pure Barre Pasadena is go up on our tippy toes. It's hard and it's a no joke addition to the class - this seemingly simple movement/position leaves my legs and entire core worked to exhaustion and toned to the max. The part I love most is that you can modify this technique as you get better - the more experience I have, the higher I can go on my tippy toes and the more I will work all the affected muscle groups.

[TPBE] A girl walks into (a) barre and says "OW"

I have officially completed my 1st week of The Pure Barre Effect at Pure Barre Pasadena!
WOOHOOO!

(matchy matchy with instructor Leah Purcell)

Recap
During my 1st week of TPBE, I attending the following classes:

Tuesday 6/19/12 @ 6:35pm with Kimi Cantrell
Class #1 and I LOVED IT - I'm totally hooked! Check out more of my initial thoughts here.

Wednesday 6/20/12 @ 6:35pm with Leah Purcell
Class #2 and still loving it! Going back for a second day in a row was rough, I won't lie, but I ultimately agreed with instructor Leah's opinion that pushing through can feel great and incredibly rewarding. Leah, like Kimi, really keeps me motivated and she adjusted and corrected my posture/form from time to time which I really appreciate. This class was a much smaller group than my 1st class, which was nice because I got to experiment with different sized classes.

Thursday 6/21/12 @ 12:00pm with Alexis Hovden
Class #3 with the one and only OWNER of Pure Barre Pasadena, Alexis Hovden! While I can't usually go during the day because of work, I made a point of getting there for Alexis' class because I really wanted to check out her style. She was great and like Kimi and Leah, kept me motivated, working hard and using correct form. She incorporated some moves I hadn't done yet which was a perfect opportunity to work different areas and learn more Pure Barre technique.

Thoughts & Observations
I find it SHOCKING that I feel such a difference after only one week of 3 classes.

I feel sore, but in a good way. I can still move, but my body and muscles have most definitely been worked on a much deeper level than usual. What I find even more facinating is WHEN & HOW I feel sore - most of the time when I've been sore after exercise, it's just in daily life (every time I walk, sit, turn, talk, etc... I feel like screaming out in pain), but with the Pure Barre technique, my muscles are getting worked on such a deep level that the soreness only surfaces when I go back to work those muscles again or when I bend and stretch in certain ways. To me, this is a type of soreness that is totally manageable, because I hate having to go through my day feeling miserable.

**SPECIAL OBSERVATION FOR THE LADIES**
Ok, ladies... so it just so happened that my first week of TPBE landed right before my special monthly visitor showed up (you know which one I'm talking about...). This is the area that I noticed the most tremendous difference:

2 full days of cramps turned into half a day of minor cramps!
2-3 days of irritability and PMS turned into about an hour!
2-3 days of bloating and feeling like a huge pregnant whale woman turned into barely any bloating at all... like, I almost forgot my cycle was going to start because I use my bloat factor as a good indication of timing!

I should also mention that I have gone through changes with my cycle as I've exercised more, but NOTHING like THIS! The intense core strengthening and tucking and squeezing movements that I've been doing at Pure Barre really tapped into the muscles that are affected by my monthly cycle and completely changed what I'm used to in the best way possible. When push comes to shove, I will always go to Pure Barre because it makes that one week a month a million times more manageable!

(Party @ PBPasadena - from left: Hanna Azboy, Me, Alexis Hovden, Emily Adams, Jenn Barker)

Favorite Technique of the Week

TUCKING MY SEAT!! Tucking your seat is something you do throughout the entire Pure Barre class and I think it makes a big difference. Not quite sure what tucking your seat means? Stand up straight as you normally would and soften your knees so you're legs are not completely locked - from there, pull in your abdomen while very slightly shifting your hips forward so it feels like you're literally tucking your bottom underneath you. By tucking my seat, my core is actively engaged and I have to concentrate on my movements exponentially more. Even though it makes the workout harder, it also makes it way more effective and I LOVE THAT!

[TPBE] The Starting Line

Yesterday, I survived my very first class at Pure Barre Pasadena.
Today, I want to tell you all about it.
::1st::
THANK YOU KIMI for a great class (that's us... cute, right?!). You really got me moving and working up a sweat! Your positive energy and welcoming attitude made me feel at home right from the get go, and I felt motivated to keep going even when I was pushed to my limit. Your instruction was easy to follow and I love that you were actively participating with the class :)

::2nd::
Jumping into a new goal/project/transformation really got me thinking about where I am and where I want to be. I am not fat - I just want to say that out loud... I am, however, a constant work in progress. I feel good, but honestly, I don't feel great. I feel strong and fit to an extent, but I don't feel completely toned and firm. Ultimately, there's always room for improvement and I'm all about going for the gold. It's not only me, though. Apparently, I'm not the only one in that boat. I've been hearing a lot of you out there agree that there needs to be a more welcoming place in the world for the "I'm not necessarily fat, but I want to improve myself more" kind of people. I'm tired of people telling me to "Shut up" because I already exercise a lot. I want to be in a community and environment that supports personal efforts to excel and grow - so, I'm going to create one.

IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW OVERWEIGHT YOU ARE OR IF YOU'RE NOT OVERWEIGHT AT ALL - YOU SHOULD ALWAYS STRIVE TO BE YOUR BEST. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS AIM TO BE HEALTHY, ACTIVE AND BALANCED. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BE SEARCHING FOR YOUR PASSION(S) AND EXPERIENCING THEM.
YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE BEST YOU THAT YOU CAN BE.

::3rd::
My first class yesterday was such a great wake up call. I had to remind myself to breathe. I had to encourage myself to keep going. I had to be understanding that my body wasn't used to the Pure Barre workout. I had to remember progress takes time and won't happen overnight. I had to push through the pain and keep going.

::4th::
I loved the continuous focus throughout class on tucking in your hips & "seat" (I love that they call it that too! It sounds so much classier than butt hehe!) - it completely activated my core in a way it's not used to. I loved the small concentrated movements that may not look like much to an outsider, but totally rip you to pieces and work you to the bone! Overall, I just love Pure Barre so far. I should note - I am sore today, in such a great way though. I can still move - which is a huge plus. However, because of the concentrated movements, I can really feel which muscles were worked (for instance, my triceps and obliques are feeling it the most). I'd almost say it's like a deeper sense of soreness - one that leaves me trusting the effectiveness of the Pure Barre workout and hungry to go back for more.

::5th & Finally::
Since I really want to see the transformation that my body and mind experience from committing to Pure Barre Pasadena, I thought it would be important to track my progress with actual statistics. So, as much as it may pain me to expose myself to this degree...

Here's me, right now, at the starting line:
*Note: I refused to do the typical "sad face" starting line pictures because I am happy with my current state - I just want to improve even more!

Introducing: The Pure Barre Effect

My fit life is a balancing act. I want it all - a long healthy life, a great fit body, a memorably fabulous social life, a successful career, and endless amounts of time and funds to relax and be pampered. Easiest balancing act in the world, right?! HA! No such luck my friend.

My life in general is a total roller coaster. I'm in constant pursuit of aforementioned balance and finding a way to have it all and get it all done. For instance, rewind 2 weeks ago: I was just minding my own business, doing great on my fit life routine, and I got totally knocked down - fever, cold/flu symptoms, overall sad face all of a sudden one night. I recovered fairly quickly (which I'm told is a true sign of good health - sweet!), but it had the usual lame effect that sickness has - my routine was totally thrown off. After 2 weeks of too little exercise and too much food, I'm finally ready to say "Enough!" (like J.Lo, ba-dum-chhhhh). I'm ready for a transformation.

I Want Results

Before exercise was a consistent part of my daily and weekly routine, I had a very general concept about the impact it had or didn't have on my life and my body. I'd go to the gym maybe once or twice a week if I was "good" and I felt like I was pretty good at what I call keeping my fat girl at bay. However, like being shoved from a dark room into the brightness of day, once positive changes were made, I began to see how gloomy and uncomfortable the place was that I'd previously been. An opinion that once went something like "If I work out a few times this week I'll look skinnier..." has completely transformed into an understanding that I'm in control and can have the body of my dreams. Depending on the kind of workout I do and the consistency that I'm doing it, my body and mind will change into something uniquely created by that combination.

So, as I've pursued and maintained a consistent exercise routine and seen the varying effects that it has on me and my body, I've come to find that my ideal workout combination is "free fitness" like running outside, doing exercises and using free weights at home, etc... and "worth every penny classes" at specialty fitness and exercise studios.

When I tell people this is what I like to do, I often get the same response of "Oh, well, those are expensive. I can't afford classes like that." Maybe... I think. Maybe you can't... but maybe you also have a gym membership that isn't used very often. Maybe you're complaining about not liking your body, but then you're also paying little to no attention on how you exercise and how often. Maybe you don't really know what you're talking about. I didn't know what I was talking about when I said things like that.

Here's the real deal, based on my experience - Specialty fitness and exercise studios can be incredibly worth it:
  • There are all kinds of options and deals (pay class by class, monthly or annual memberships, class packages, deals through the Internet, etc...).
  • There are classes for a set amount of time (which is usually longer than you would push yourself) and they're offered at a variety of times each day to accommodate your schedule.
  • You're receiving guided instruction - so, it's almost like you're having personal training sessions (which are really expensive).
  •  The type of specialty workout you do will have a unique and amazing effect on you and your body.

You guys know me though, I like to be realistic too. Yes, specialty fitness and exercise studios can be incredibly worth it, but they can also be the exact opposite. I like to go into new relationships with studios similar to the way I like to get into pools and the ocean - (1) toe dip first, because let's not get crazy (2) slowly inch further in to make a partial commitment (3) upon feeling everything out and gathering all necessary information - dive in (4) enjoy! Need the translation of how on earth that relates to specialty fitness and exercise studios?? Sure - (1) go to a free or discounted first class to try it out commitment free (2) buy a small(er) package of classes - maybe 5 or 10 - to get started and used to going consistently (3) commit based on your ability - maybe get some type of membership or continue buying packages of classes that meet your needs (4) see how your body and mind transform and ENJOY!

Because I'm such a believer in this process, I'm going to take on my own transformation and show you what happens. Excited?? YAH, ME TOO!

Tomorrow marks a new day, a new fitness studio relationship, a new opportunity to commit, and a new me. Stay tuned...
